Colby Felts, the son of Senior Master Sgt. (Ret.) Jackie Felts and Master Sgt. Kevin Felts of the 185th Air Refueling Wing (ARW), was the recipient of this year's Colonel V. Thomas Considine academic scholarship. The $500 scholarship is named after Colonel Thomas Considine, former Wing Commander of the 185th Air Refueling Wing (ARW).

Felts, a recent graduate from Remsen Union High School in Remsen, Iowa, will attend the University of South Dakota in the fall where he plans to study Pre-Medicine.

As part of the scholarship application, Felts was asked to write an essay highlighting what it means to be associated with the 185th ARW. Felts, has a unique relationship with the 185th in that both of his parents are long time members of the Wing. Felts credits much of the maturity he learned when growing up, on the core values taught to him by his military parents. He wrote about responsibility, dedication and leadership. Felts ended the essay by talking about the 185th family "The best part about the 185th is that it is a family... The people that protect this country are truly special and they often don't get the thanks they deserve" wrote Felts.

The Considine scholarship was established in 2001 by family and friends in memory of Col. Considine, the former commander of the 185th Fighter Wing. The scholarship assists graduating high school seniors pursuing post-secondary degrees.

To be considered for the scholarship, students must be enlisted in the 185th ARW or be a child or legal dependent of a currently active or retired member of the 185th ARW. Candidates for the scholarship must submit a packet including two letters of recommendation, high school transcripts and an essay highlighting what it means to be associated with the Air National Guard and the 185th ARW.

The committee in charge of selecting the recipient of the scholarship includes one member of the Considine scholarship, a representative from the 185th ARW, an education specialist, a civic leader, and a member of the Siouxland Community Foundation.
