Four members of the Iowa Air National Guard’s 185th Air Refueling Wing were honored over the weekend by the head of the Iowa Air Guard for their part in assisting with a recent motor vehicle accident.

During the September training weekend they were given the commanders coin from Brig. Gen. Shawn Ford who is the Deputy Adjutant General for the Iowa Air National Guard.

Master Sgt. Adam Wright was one of the four Airmen who were presented with the commander’s coin during the training weekend. Wright works as a dental technician in the Iowa Guard and works full time as a paramedic with Sioux City Fire rescue.

“I thought we did what anyone would do in the situation,” said Wright “but it’s nice to know that your actions are noticed.”

The rollover accident happened as each were on their way home following their August training weekend. According to the citation they immediately started giving aid to the victim.  After helping the driver they directed traffic in order to ensure the safety of other motorists passing by the scene.

Others who helped at the scene were Technical Sgt. Donovan Masters who works as a deputy with Woodberry County Sheriff’s office in Iowa, Capt. Paul Niles is a Physician Assistant and Technical Sgt. Loni Kuhlmann works as a contractor with Iowa Guard.

“They walked upon an accident, saw something that needed to be done and the took care of business,” said General Ford. “We have great people doing great things, that I think demands recognition.”

Ford said that these guard members are the very definition of “patriot,” adding that many guard members like those who were recognized, serve twice because they are fire fighters, police and first responders and also serve in the military.
