Sioux City, Iowa -- Iowa National Guard Joint Forces Headquarters announced this week that Colonel Sonya Morrison has been selected as the next Wing Commander of the 185th Air Refueling Wing in Sioux City, Iowa. Morrison is replacing Col. Mark Muckey who has been serving as the 185th Wing Commander since 2018.
The Osceola, Iowa native received her commission through the Army ROTC program after graduation from the University of Northern Iowa in 1999.
Morrison initially trained as a helicopter pilot with the Iowa Army National Guard where she was assigned to the 1-113th Cavalry in Waterloo, Iowa.
Morrison moved to the Air National Guard in 2005 where she trained as an F-16 Fighter pilot with the 132nd Fighter Wing in Des Moines before becoming a pilot with 185th ARW in Sioux City.
Morrison is currently serving as the Vice Wing Commander for the 185th ARW. Morrison has previously served as the 185th Support Group Commander and as the State Director of Staff in Des Moines.
A formal change of command ceremony is tentatively being planned for August, 2022.
Current 185th ARW commander, Colonel Mark Muckey has been selected as the Deputy Adjutant General for Air for the Iowa National Guard at Camp Dodge in Des Moines, Iowa. Muckey will be promoted to Brigadier General and assume his new position following a formal handoff of the Wing leadership in the coming months.
