Rain and Cold Does Not Stop the 185th ARW or the Race for Hope

North Sioux City, S.D. --  Despite the cold and the rain, over 200 members and family of the 185th Air Refueling Wing (ARW) joined hundreds of racers to participate in the 14th Annual June E. Nylen Race for Hope this Saturday at Maude Adam's Nature Preserve in North Sioux City, S.D.

While the trails on the Adam's Nature Preserve were full of mud and puddles, hundreds of runners laced up their shoes and tacked on their dedication banners and braved through the unusually cold September weather. Donning tan jerseys that feature the 185th ARW logo, the unit made up the largest team in the race.

This year, the 185th ARW served as the official Ambassadors of this year's race. U.S. Bank, an official sponsor of the Race for Hope, pledged to donate $10 for every member of the 185th ARW who participated. With over 200 runners, U.S. Bank will donate an extra $2,000 to the June E. Nylen Center.

Race coordinator Jean Gill said in the closing ceremony, "This year's race was a huge success. We reached over 1,000 racers. The 185th had a lot to do with that success."

The June E. Nylen Cancer Center is Siouxland's Center for treating and supporting individuals diagnosed with various forms of cancer. Their mission is to provide quality, compassionate cancer care through prevention, treatment, and research. Proceeds from this race will be used to support new equipment and programs at the Cancer Center. This year's funds will be used to purchase new chemotherapy treatment chairs, a new fitness program for cancer patients, a support group for the children of cancer patients, and lobby enhancements for the benefit of our cancer patients.
