Col. V. Thomas Considine Scholarship Awarded: Caitlin Ascherl Recipient

The 2008 recipient of the Col. V. Thomas Considine Scholarship is Caitlin Ascherl, a Spalding Catholic High School graduate and daughter of Lt. Col. Joseph Ascherl. Caitlin will receive $500 to attend college and major in Broadcast Journalism.

In memory of past commander Col. V. Thomas Considine and his commitment to achieving higher educations, friends and family established the scholarship in 2001. This scholarship is designed to assist graduating seniors in their pursuit of a post-secondary education.

"While serving in the military is an honorable and very rewarding career, it's not a job for everyone," wrote Ascherl in her essay submitted as part of the application package. "I have made the decision to serve my country by enlisting in the 185th Air Refueling Wing of the Iowa Air National Guard and couldn't be happier with my choice." Though it is not a requirement that the scholarship award recipient be a member of the 185th, Ascherl recently followed the Ascherl family tradition and enlisted into the Guard. Her father, two uncles, and three of her cousins have all been members of the 185th.

"From attending Christmas parties and even being an elf as a young girl to participating on the winning kickball team this last fall at the family picnic, the unit is alive with enthusiasm for life and dedicated to serving its families and community. These are just a few reasons why I joined the 185th ARW and I look forward to being a part of this excitement," she added.
