Future Air Guardsmen take the oath of enlistment at hockey game

Sioux City, Iowa --  The newest members of the 185th Air Refueling Wing in Sioux City, Iowa were given the oath of enlistment at a ceremony during Military Appreciation Night hosted by the Sioux City Musketeers hockey team, at the Tyson Event Center here on November 7, 2015.

2nd Lt. William Dahna administered the oath of enlistment to nine new recruits at center ice during a game intermission as a crowd of over 2,500 people watched from the stands.   The new enlistees consisted of seven high school seniors and two college students all from the Siouxland area. They will leave for basic military training in the next year.

The 185th ARW recruiters saw this as a great opportunity to get some good exposure at a popular public event.

"Every week we visit schools and members are always welcome to come with us to the school visit or help us in the events," said MSgt. Hiliana Suarez, a recruiter manager at the 185th ARW, "we are always looking for leads and referrals."

The Sioux City Musketeers and local businesses sponsored the Military Appreciation Night to honor veterans and service members every year at the home game closest to November 11, which is Veterans Day.  The team wore special military jerseys for the occasion. The jerseys were auctioned off immediately following the game, with all proceeds going to a local veteran's organization.
