A CH-47 Chinook helicopter from Company B, 2nd Battalion 238th Aviation, based in Peoria Illinois is being refueled while on the ramp at the Iowa Air National Guard base in Sioux City, Iowa. Members of the 185th Air Refueling Wing based in Sioux City are refueling the helicopter while it is still running. “Hot Refueling” saves time for the air crew who will return to flooded areas along the Missouri River. National Guard Soldiers and from South Dakota, Illinois and Iowa are assisting local and state authorities in Western Iowa and South East South Dakota to protect private properties and municipalities along the swollen Missouri River. An RF-84 on the ramp in Sioux City, Iowa dubbed “Sioux City Sue” belongs to the 174th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron of the Iowa Air National Guard. The moniker “Sioux City Sue” was adopted from the 1945 song by country artist Dick Thomas. Iowa Air Guard Photo

Unique items in the Thunderflash are the view finder (top center) a large optic that allowed the pilot see what was being photographed through the lens of the camera and four camera control units in the lower center portion of the photograph. This newly refurbished RF-84 Thunderflash dubbed “Sioux City Sue” is on the ramp in Sioux City, Iowa. It was painted to depict the paint scheme from the late 1950’s when the 174th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, Iowa Air National Guard flew the photo reconnaissance mission with the RF-84. The moniker “Sioux City Sue” was adopted from the 1945 song of the same name. The aircraft is now ready to be put back on static display in Sioux City, Iowa. The business end of the RF-84 Thunderflash is at the nose of the aircraft where a variety of cameras could be loaded. Cameras could face almost any direction to accommodate the needs of the mission.
