An F-80 Shooting Star is in the process of being refurbished at the Air National Guard paint facility in Sioux City, Iowa. The aircraft has undergone extensive revitalization at the 185th Air Refueling Wing fabrication shop and is being repainted at the paint facility here. The Aircraft will be stenciled with the markings of the Sioux City, Iowa Air National Guard scheme from the middle 1950’s. The then 174th Fighter Bomber Squadron (FBS) flew the F-80 from 1953 to 1955. Unique items in the Thunderflash are the view finder (top center) a large optic that allowed the pilot see what was being photographed through the lens of the camera and four camera control units in the lower center portion of the photograph. This newly refurbished RF-84 Thunderflash dubbed “Sioux City Sue” is on the ramp in Sioux City, Iowa. It was painted to depict the paint scheme from the late 1950’s when the 174th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, Iowa Air National Guard flew the photo reconnaissance mission with the RF-84. The business end of the RF-84 Thunderflash is at the nose of the aircraft where a variety of cameras could be loaded. Cameras could face almost any direction to accommodate the needs of the mission.
