The Iowa Air National Guard’s 185th Air Refueling Wing (ARW) and 132nd Fighter Wing (FW) are in Williamtown, New South Wales Australia. The Iowa based guard units are in Australia for a three week long exercise “Sentry Down Under”, working with the Royal Australian Air Forces (RAAF) 2nd Operational Conversion Flight, the 3rd Operational Squadron and the 77th Operational Squadron while in the Williamtown RAAF.
During “Sentry Down Under” one KC-135 air refueling aircraft and a total of 21 members of the 185th (ARW) flight and ground crew are providing mid-air refueling support for F-18’s from the RAAF. The Sioux City, Iowa based 185th is also providing refueling support for the 132nd Fighter Wing from Des Moines, Iowa while they are deployed here to Australia.
Several F-16s from the 132nd Fighter Wing are performing tactical sorties as well as familiarization flights while in Australia. By providing mid-air refueling the 185th is providing a unique service to the Australians who do not have mid-air refueling aircraft like the KC-135.
